Title: (ALTERNATE TITLE)

Description: This chart sounds much more difficult than it is. A blues variation in 13/4 over a hard rock ostinato, the V chord area shifts to 12/8 (dotted quarter remains constant). Sections are scored as units, for the most part. Solo changes appear in bari, guitar and piano parts, but could go anywhere. Scored solo space for electric bass, as well as two collective improvisations. The tune is kicked off by a Tenor 1 cadenza (could be guitar, or anyone) leading to the ostinato. Lead Trumpet to written E, Trombone 1 to A. Originally written to feature the quartet, Equilateral, with college-level big bands, the inspiration for this tune came from two songs from Led Zeppelin IIMoby Dick and Heartbreaker. Its shreddin time! SoloistTenor 1; Bari Sax, Guitar, Piano (or anyone); Electric Bass. Doublesnone.Brass5 trumpets, 4 trombones.

Title: ADESTE FIDELES (O COME ALL YE FAITHFUL)

Description: The popular yet ancient melody has been attributed to a variety of composers, yet it still remains anonymous. This arrangement explores the tune from times past to the present. The first verse is transcribed from a motet by Samuel Webbe published in 1795 for solo soprano and piano. The second is a precise transcription (including dynamics and articulations) of the first variation of a piano arrangement by Charles Grobe published in 1854. The third is in the original key of an 1892 hymnal arrangement by Mary Palmer and John Farmer. The fourth verse and coda are my own. Most all versions of the tune until the 20th century were known as Adeste Fideles. Two alternate trumpet parts in C are included. Trumpet 1 in Bb to written G just above the staff. Medium.

Title: AND SO BUT ANYWAY

Description: This happy hip-hop shuffle features lots of linear writing for every player in the band, including the rhythm section. In addition to the main solo section over the form, the ensemble development section features exchanges between the horn sections and electric bass, and climaxes in a tenor/drums slugfest ala Wayne Shorter and Steve Gadd on the Steely Dan tune, Aja. The shadow of Donald Fagen looms large over this piece! Lead Trumpet to written C, Trombone 1 to B flat. Originally scored to feature the quartet, Equilateral, with college-level big bands, the title is borrowed from the author David Foster Wallaces magnum opus, Infinite Jest. SoloistAlto 2 (briefly), Electric Bass, Tenor 1/drums. Changes over the main solo section appear in Alto 1, Trumpet 5, and Trombone 1 as well as piano, vibes and guitar. Doublesnone.Brass5 trumpets, 4 trombones.

Title: AVALON

Description: This Vincent Rose (or Puccini, as some have claimed) classic, travels gradually through time from quarter note metronome marking 64 to 124. It is a clever theme and variations style arrangement that transforms the early 20th century melody in five different statements. It progresses from a slow funeral march to an up tempo jazz double time feel with a variety of interesting ensemble work in between. Ranges are moderate with lead briefly to a high C. 5 trombones ( 4 tenor and 1 bass).

Title: AVE MARIA

Description: Ave Maria in Latin means Hail Mary. It was composed by Franz Schubert in 1825 as part of his Opus 52, a setting of seven songs from Walter Scott's popular epic poem The Lady of the Lake, loosely translated into German. Although the song is a prayer, Schuberts Ave Maria was not written with religious practices or the Catholic Church in mind. Probably because of the songs opening words, Schuberts melody has since been adopted for use with the traditional Roman Catholic prayer (in Latin) of the same name. Ave Maria has become one of Schubert's most popular works, performed and recorded by a wide variety and large number of musicians, under the title of Ave Maria. It features lead trumpet solo along with a clarinet lead soli, trombone soli, and an ensemble chorus. The chart is scored for 1 clarinet, 2 altos, 2 tenors, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, Piano, Bass, and Drums. Lead trumpet to written high C above the staff. Medium level.

Title: BABY WON'T YOU PLEASE COME HOME/SOME OF THESE DAYS

Description: These two standards are cleverly arranged both independently and then together in their original key of F major. Not only do both share the same key, they share the same opening notes, phrases and melodic range. Their complimentary alternating phrase structure of active and passive measures fit together perfectly for combining the two melodies together in counterpoint. The in the staff melodies make for moderate ranges and gorgeous harmonizations. This is a fresh approach to two often performed standards. Trumpet 1 to one written high C.
