Title: RUNNIN' WITH A FULL TANK Description: Runnin' With A Full Tank is a medium tempo funk tune that begins with the opening octinato bass line which anchors the A section of the song. However, it soon evolves into a driving double time rock feel that features two trombones duelling it out to the bitter end... This is followed by a percussion solo which brings us back to the outhead, but not before a call and response vocal section between a vocal soloist ( band member?) and the band (and/or audience) that gets everybody vocally riffing on the title Runnin' On A Full Tank. Title: SA FA Description: Commissioned by the San Jose Jazz Society, is a feature for Baritone Saxophone and Flugel horn. This tune swings with a 50's vibe, and should not be too fast. Interesting modal sections break up the formal structure giving soloists a chance to play off of each other. Alto 1 doubles on Flute. Changes are challenging. Title: SMOOTH-TONGUED VILLAINY Description: Even with a seriously evil title, this has some beautiful moments. If you include timpani in your ensemble, this can be an outstanding feature (2 timps possible, better with 3), but it's all cued in other parts. A syncopated rhythmic pattern characterizes much of the beginning with some delicious dissonances. The ad lib solos are for 1st and 2nd trombones, trading eights, ending a dual cadenza. Following is a second thematic second leading to the opening feel (with a little variation) and the main motif, transformed. A big finish climaxes. Piano is important in this piece. WW 1-soprano saxophone, alternate alto part provided. Optional parts for French horns (alternate parts for Tpt 5-6 provided), tuba, and percussion (mallets and hand-percussion). |
