Title: SILENT NIGHT

Description: First performed Christmas eve in a small Austrian village church by a few singers with guitar accompaniment (performed by the composer, Franz Gruber) in 1818, this song has become the most recorded Christmas tune of all time (according to a 2013 Time magazine survey of Christmas recordings). Joseph Mohr, assistant pastor and choir director, wrote the poem Gruber would set to music. The first half of this arrangement orchestrates two of the earliest known manuscripts researchers have discovered. Both are in 6/8 and the key of D. The first chorus (placed in C) is taken from a handwritten score by Gruber, probably in the mid 1820s, for small chamber orchestra. The horn part is exactly as Gruber wrote it. The second verse in D is from a copy of the first performance made by Mohr in 1820 for guitar and choir. In both of these authentic presentations the last two lines of the tune we now know as Silent Night, are repeated. The arrangement then takes off with more modern harmonies and ends in a brisk 3/4. Early versions of this tune were undoubtedly peppier than most modern interprtations. Two alternate trumpet part in C are included. Trumpet 1 (Bb part) to written B above staff. Medium.

The melody features a soprano and tenor duo in the spirit of the original recording. Solos are in the soprano, trumpet 2 and rhythm for the latin solo section followed by a tenor break and a burning up-tempo swing solo. The drummer gets space for an open solo and followed by a written duet battle written across the sections. Title: SOME OF THESE DAYS

Description: This is a great jazz piano feature in a swing style at 150+ BPM for the quarter note. Originally,"Some of These Days" became a signature song for Sophie Tucker, who made the first of several recordings of it in 1911. The chart starts off with a piano cadenza, measure 1, playing something that is either contrary to, or something similar to the melody, then moving smoothly into the actual melody (MM 2) ---use your imagination The first 16 bars of the melody are rubato, without the band, followed by the second 16 bars, again without the band, in a 1920’s James P. Johnson stride piano style. The piano plays the head (melody) in a George Shearing sax style voicing with the band. Both the stride and the George Shearing voicings are written so that most pianists can perform it without struggling too much. Furthermore, I have included a lead sheet so the soloist has the option to vary the melody. There is a challenging tutti section which includes the string bass. Trumpet highest note: D5 (Two octaves above middle C) There is only one 8th note D. Instrumentation: Two trumpets, one trombone,One alto, one tenor, one baritone sax.Rhythm section: piano, string bass, drums, and guitar No doubles. Medium.

Title: SOMEWHAT FREVO

Description: This is a Brazilian jazz piece for big band that combines jazz with Frevo. Frevo is a rhythm from Northeast Brazil, normally played during the carnaval. Frevo is played at a medium to fast tempo, often with linear melody. In this piece the melody is challenged by angularity and counterpoint, and the frevo groove is reshaped by odd meters. Jazz harmony and improvisation are also incorporated in the structure of this piece featuring the tenor and soprano saxophones, and it can be expanded to have piano, bass and guitar solos. Arranged for the standard big band, optional parts for vibraphone and flute are also available but not necessary. Instrumentation: 2 altos, 2 tenors, baritone sax, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, guitar, piano, bass, drums. The highest note on the trumpet is a concert D above the staff. Difficult
